The colorful sprites of the 16-bit generation provide more cuteness than horror. But Resident Evil changed that. Resident Evil was released for the Playstation in 1996, pronouncing the legitimacy of horror in video games. Early in the game you walk down a long hall with big windows when suddenly zombie dogs leap through your path. These aren’t the slow moving, lumbering zombies. These are fast, rabid dogs that can withstand several of your limited bullets many for not only a horrific surprise, but a scary challenge where you first realize, this game isn’t about killing bad guys, it’s about survival.
