Stan “The Man” Lee made his career helping create the Marvel Universe, but in his twilight years, Stan has gotten a second career in movie cameos. Stan Lee has appeared in almost all Marvel Comics movies and makes surprise appearances in TV shows, cartoons, and the occasional DC property. This list ranks the geekiest, most comic book friendly Stan Lee cameos with no bearing on the actual quality of the movie (it’s almost an inverse relationship).
7. The Hulk as security guard with Lou Ferrigno
Not only was this Stan Lee’s first speaking role in a Marvel movie, but “The Man” got to work security with the original Hulk, Lou Ferrigno in a double whammy of geekery.
6. Fantastic Four 2 as rejected wedding guest
Poor Stan Lee. He co-creates almost the entire Marvel Universe, but he not one even sends him a wedding invitation. Stan Lee arrives assuming it was an over sight only to be not only turned away, but not even recognizes. How shameful.
5. Daredevil saves Stan
So Stan Lee really did create Daredevil, literally. Matt Murdock becomes blind trying to save silly old Stan Lee from a truck carrying radioactive waste, and well, you know the drill. Giving Stan Lee such an important part of the hero’s origin was quite an honor I’m sure Stan hadn’t thought 40 years before.
4. Spider-Man 3 saying ‘Nuff Said
Stan Lee’s used to have very few speaking roles in Marvel films, though now he’s starting to talk more than ever. Amazingly, Stan let out one of his famous catch phrases in Spider-Man 3, first offering Peter Parker some advice, “You know, I guess one person can make a difference” and then summing it up just like Stan Lee would with “‘Nuff Said.”
3. Mallrats as himself
Comic obsessed filmmaker Kevin Smith manages to get Stan “The Man” Lee in his second major motion picture (assuming you count Clerks as major). Lee offers Brodie Bruce advice on love using, what else, but comic book characters as examples. Then they talk about super hero wangs. That’s geeky.
2. Iron Man as Hugh Heffner
Technically Stan Lee is credited in the film as playing himself, but we all know there’s only one old man who can get away with
wearing a two blonds and a smoking jacket. It seems Stan Lee is the only playboy who upstate even Tony Stark.
1. Fantastic Four as Willy Lumpkin
It’s the role Stan was born to play. Not that I’m call him old, but, I mean, come on. Long time Fantastic Four fans quickly recognize Willy Lumpkin, the FF’s long time mailman, and we’re happy to see his creator show off his acting chops in the role.
