Annoying brothers and sisters affect even the greatest heroes and villains of comic book world. These pairs (and quartet) of spandex wearing freaks make sibling rivalry a moral lesson for us all, and page filler until the next battle. These are the siblings worth watching fight and frolic, no matter the awkwardness.
7. Starmen, Jack and David Knight
The original Starman, Ted Knight, had two loving sons with different take’s on their father’s career choice. David quickly followed his father into super heroics while Jack looked down on the colorful profession. After their father’s old foe, the Mist, murdered David did Jack take over the Starman mantle. With the Cosmic Staff and a pair of goggles, Jack Knight fought crime with the annual assistance of his brother’s ghost, who imparted wisdom from the beyond to help Jack foil the doers of evil.
6. Northstar and Aurora
Canadian super-siblings Northstar and Aurora spent most of their youth separated after their parents’ death. The two coincidently reunited as members of Canadian super-team Alpha Flight, discovering they earn bonus super powers when in physical contact. When the two touched, they emitted a beam of light that made people feel happy and peaceful. How sweet. The power didn’t work on themselves, however, since they had a falling out leading Aurora to augment her powers so she never needed to touch her gay brother again. Homophobe.
5. Wonder Twins
Speaking of gay, here come the Wonder Twins, the most androgynous and sexually twisted super-siblings. But all that makes for great children’s TV as the pair made their name as staples of the Super Friends. The duo offered valuable skills to the team with Zan’s ability to transform into a form of water and Jayna turning into any animal. To activate their powers, they had to touch. And they touched a lot. It was disturbing.
4. Human Torch and Invisible Woman
Their mother died in a car crash and their father blamed, Johnny and Susan Storm were left on their own while still kids. Susan watched over her brothers, remaining close when they accompanied Susan’s boyfriend, Reed Richards, on an experimental space mission turning them into the Fantastic Four. The two make up distinct members of the team, from mother figure to rebellious teenager. I’ll
leave you to guess which is which.
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This quartet of brother turtles made spending time with family look fun. Unfortunately, most of us didn’t have giant rats for parents, an awesome sewer hideout, and a Turtle Van. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shared a passion for the important things in life: pizza, toys, and skateboards. They had stress, too, with sourpuss Rafael and goody-to-shoes Leonardo crossing sais and katannas. But a good cowabunga and pepperoni made it all better.
2. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch
The mutant twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were raised by gypsies before discovering their super-powers. Magneto recruited the two to his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants not realizing they were his children. The
two eventually join the good guys as members of the Avengers. But all is not good forever as both heroes decided to return to villainy without the manipulations of their father. Scarlet Witch had the excuse of going totally insane and Quicksilver used her to remake the world. If you prefer, in the Ultimate-verse Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are only incestuous. Better?
1. Cyclops and Havok
Few siblings have as much drama, hostility, and raw emotion as the Summers brothers. As kids, Scott and Alex (Cyclops and Havok respectively) lost their parents when a Shi’ar spaceship abducted their plane. Scott and Alex escaped and ended up in an orphanage. The younger Alex got adopted, leaving Scott there to be experimented on by later nemesis Mr. Sinister. Scott joined the X-Men, followed shortly by his brother, who became quick rivals. Scott played the boy scout while Alex had trouble following directions. The two’s fighting became challenging as each other’s powers were ineffective against the other.
Drama increased when the third Summers brother was revealed to the audible groan of X-Men fans everywhere. Vulcan was born on the Shi’ar spaceship after the Summers were abducted. He had returned to Earth and was lost, for a time, sent on a secret mission by X-men founder Professor X.
