Superheroes, demons, and plants are not your standard musical subject matter, but for the unique genre of Geek Musicals, they are the C# to our A major chord. Musicals dwell in a world of fantasy and disbelief that geeks are well versed in making the genres oddly compatible yet rarely recognized. Here I highlight the 7 best geek musicals, judged on their subject matter, entertainment value, and quality of songs. Only musicals with released performances, either on stage or film, were considered. Each musical includes a musical video, so prepare to hum, laugh, and cry through the list of the Best Geek Musicals here at Geek Musical Week on Prodigeek.

One of the greatest and freakiest cult classics, the Rocky Horror Picture Show has been attracting freaks and geeks to midnight showings since they began in 1976. The rock musical spoofs the B-grade sci-fi movies of decades past, creating its own C-grade movie masterpiece. Movie patrons attend midnight showings dressed as the freaky characters, acting out scenes from the film, responding to the movies dialogue with scripted responses that have become inseparable from the regular story (Brad’s an asshole and Janet’s a slut).
When someone attends a Rocky Horror midnight showing for the first time, they must be deflowered in front of the audience, often with some harmless on-stage participation (that does not always lead to nakedness…only if you’re lucky). This is one Geek-Out Moment that thankfully, everyone can enjoy. So check out your local theaters and run, don’t walk to the next showing. Unless you’re wearing high heels. Take a taxi, those things hurt.
